Painting from my studio in Wiltshire, UK, I am surrounded by fields and wildlife. The more I listen and experience the more I wish to convey the fragile beauty of our surroundings. What exists in nature is a metaphor for our lives. I have a joint major in Botany and Zoology which under pins my painting process and where I started my artistic journey of scientific drawings and research.
I use many different mediums, such as watercolour, dry pigments, inks, oil and cold wax medium. My approach to materials is based on scientific enquiry examining their properties and using them in ways that are unconventional and expressive. My work seeks to achieve a textural surface and a visceral response to the subject.
Many of my paintings are directly inspired by nature. Sea, Rivers, Lakes and Plants feature extensively in my artworks. Sometimes the views are close up or at other times from a wider vantage point. All these sight lines are integrated into building the bigger picture of our landscape. I travel extensively, comparing and documenting what I find. My visual diary of memories and observations forms the source from which I draw upon for inspiration.
